Block ice is a type of rectangular or cylindrical ice that is made from fresh water or seawater in a metal can, in which the water is filled. The refrigeration is effected to the ice can, and the heat exchange is happened therefore the water in the can is frozen into ice block.
Because of the small contact area, the produced block ice has a longer melting time than any other kind of ice. Block ice is greatly welcomed in the high temperature area for fresh-keeping and cooling. The transparent block ice and colored block ice are especially developed for ice sculpture.
In ShiFT, we have two types of technologies for block ice machine, one is indirect refrigeration technology, also called glyco or sodium chloride refrigeration technology; the other is direct refrigeration technology, also called direct evaporation technology.
Newly developed bagged ice block machine especially for underdeveloped tropic region use. The ice is made in PE bags so as to maintain high sanitation of the ice block for direct human consumption. The ice is can be 3~8 kilos per block. This machine applies a direct ice evaporation system.
Indirect refrigeration block ice machine is also called brine refrigeration block ice machine. The brine water (glyco or sodium chloride) is add into the water pool, usually made of galvanized or stainless steel. The brine water is used as the secondary refrigerant to have direct heat exchange with the water bucket, in which the water is frozen into block ice after period of time.
Direct refrigeration block ice machine works under the principle of direct heat exchange between the water and refrigerant. Comparing with the indirect refrigeration system, the direct refrigeration system does not apply brine water as secondary refrigerant to transfer the heat. Hence the loss of heat during the heat exchange process can be reduced to the minimal degree. Therefore the efficiency of ice making is improved.
Ice sculpture is a form of sculpture that uses ice as the raw material. Sculpting ice presents a number of difficulties due to the variability and volatility of the material. Ice may be sculpted in a wide range of temperatures and the characteristics of the ice will change according to its temperature as well as the surrounding temperatures. Sculptures are generally carved from blocks of ice and these blocks must be carefully selected to be suitable for the sculptor's purposes and should be free of undesired impurities. With our special technology, we can manufacture block ice machines that make totally clear, transparent block ice or even colored ice for ice sculpture.
